Ukraine launched a fresh wave of drone attacks on Sunday, coinciding with the final day of Russia’s presidential vote, aimed at extending President Vladimir Putin’s rule for another six years.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported intercepting 35 Ukrainian drones overnight, including four near Moscow. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin assured the public that there were no casualties or significant damage.
Additionally, two drones were brought down in the Kaluga region, south of Moscow, and the Yaroslavl region to the northeast. Notably, the strikes in Yaroslavl, around 800 kilometres (500 miles) from the Ukrainian border, marked one of the most distant attacks launched by Ukraine to date.
The attacks also targeted regions bordering Ukraine, including Belgorod, Kursk, and Rostov, as well as the southern Krasnodar region. Tragically, in Belgorod, Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov confirmed the death of a 16-year-old girl in Ukrainian shelling, with her father sustaining injuries.

The impact of the attacks was felt in the Krasnodar region, where a drone strike ignited a fire at a refinery. Although authorities managed to extinguish the blaze after a few hours, a refinery worker succumbed to a heart attack amidst the chaos, underscoring the human toll of the conflict.
The escalation in drone warfare adds a troubling dimension to the ongoing tensions between Ukraine and Russia, highlighting the urgent need for diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the situation and prevent further loss of life.
