In Larnaca, Cyprus, preparations were underway for a second shipment of food aid destined for Gaza, as announced by the island’s president. The initial aid delivery, comprising nearly 200 tons of essential supplies, had recently reached the besieged Palestinian enclave, marking the commencement of a new relief route.

President Nikos Christodoulides confirmed that the first vessel had begun its journey back to Cyprus while emphasizing readiness for the departure of the second ship. This upcoming shipment, totalling 240 tons, was poised for departure from Larnaca port pending final clearance.

The humanitarian effort was facilitated by the collaboration of various entities, including the U.S.-based charity World Central Kitchen (WCK), in conjunction with the UAE and Spanish charity Open Arms, bolstered by support from the Cypriot government. The cargo comprised a range of provisions, including canned goods and bulk items.

Notably, the second vessel was equipped with essential machinery, including forklifts and a crane, to streamline future maritime deliveries to Gaza. Additionally, a dedicated crew was poised to accompany the shipment, ensuring efficient offloading and distribution of aid upon arrival.

During the inaugural mission, aid was offloaded onto a makeshift jetty constructed by WCK amid the remnants of demolished structures. Open Arms, the organization providing the vessel, expressed optimism regarding the establishment of this humanitarian corridor, envisioning it as a vital pathway to mitigate hunger, alleviate suffering, and restore dignity to Gaza’s civilian population.

The collaborative effort underscored a commitment to addressing the pressing humanitarian needs in Gaza, which had been exacerbated by months of conflict and deprivation.
